Ford pick up trucks combined with serene night swimming. Perhaps not two things you would normally include in the same sentence, however Ford have decided to merge the two together for its European campaign to launch of their new Ranger truck.
Aquabatix provided two of their professional underwater artists for the shoot, which took place over a week in August 2021 in Romania, both in a studio and in a lake.
Marina, a world champion free diver, and Yixin, a synchronised swimmer who has competed internationally, both were cast by Ford to appear in the beautifully filmed short film by global advertising agency Abbott Meads Vickers BBDO. The ‘night swimming’ Ford advert depicts a group of friends calmly moving underwater in a lake, gradually floating to the surface where you notice they are lit by headlamps. They rise up to wade through the lake’s water whilst more headlights come into focus, with the viewer realising that the group are surrounded by Ford Ranger trucks.
The Aquabatix underwater artists are so skilled at moving underwater, and being in water for long periods of time, that they excelled on this shoot. They were used for most of the shots, because of their incredible ability with breath hold, graceful movement underwater, and not becoming tired being in water for long periods of time.
Ford wanted to show off their truck’s wading depth ability which is 800mm. As Martin Loraine, writer and deputy executive creative director of AMV BBDO states “The convention for pickups is to show rough terrain and tough loads, but Ranger has the best wading depth in the category. Showing it drive through deep water felt right creatively, but also makes it stand apart from other pick ups.”
The short film was directed by Adam Berg at Smuggler, with a print campaign shot by Benedict Redgrove.
