Underwater performance creates a front page splash:
As Londoners and tourists bustled through the historic streets of Covent Garden, they were met with a sight unlike any other: a large portable tank brimming with water, shimmering under the spring sunlight with a pair of synchronised swimmers creating an underwater performance to music. This aquatic spectacle marked a momentous occasion – a celebration of 100 days until the Paris Olympics with the Olympic games official hospitality sponsor On Location.
Organised by Sketch, the event was a testament to the intersection of artistry and athleticism. Drawing in crowds from all corners of the city, having been advertised on billboards across the city, the scene was set for an unforgettable experience as people went about their everyday lives.
From Olympic champions to curious passersby, the gathering boasted an impressive array of attendees. Dame Laura Kenny, Jason Kenny, and Greg Rutherford, icons in their respective fields, graced the occasion with their presence, lending unwavering support to the media frenzy that ensued. BBC, ITV, Channel 5 and Reuters all picked up the underwater performances with news coverage along with the next day cover of The Times, a feature in Tatler and several online publications too.
finesse and grace, the pairs of synchronised swimmers moved in perfect synchrony to the sounds of Edith Piaf’s timeless melodies and the infectious beats of French house group Daft Punk. Each movement, each twist and turn, was a testament to the years of dedication and training that brought them to this moment. Choreographed by Katie Fried, at the home of Aquatic Impact’s tank in Peterborough, the four swimmers, London 2012 Olympians Asha George and Katie Clark alongside Britian’s Got Talent finalist Emily Kuhl and Chinese national team swimmer Sisy Wang worked endlessly to bring the vision to life.
As the day unfolded, the crowds grew, drawn by the allure of this unique celebration. Covent Garden, known for its vibrant street performances and eclectic atmosphere, provided the perfect backdrop for this aquatic extravaganza. Spectators were treated to a visual underwater performance feast, as the water seemed to come alive with the energy and passion of the performers.
For those fortunate enough to witness it, the event served as a reminder of the power of human creativity and collaboration. In the heart of London, just a stone’s throw away from iconic landmarks and bustling markets, Aquabatix transported onlookers to a world where artistry knows no bounds.
